OUR HISTORY |
Today, the city of Deux-Montagnes has a population of about 18,000. Some towns this size have only one or two schools and a single church. Deux-Montagnes has eight schools andfive churches, a surprising number for 18,000 residents. Two factors have had a determinant influence. The first is location: Deux-Montagnes's two French high schools, Polyvalente Deux-Montagnes and École Secondaire Lac des Deux-Montagnes, and one English high school, Lake of Two Mountains, serve a regional clientele.
The second, more important factor is, of course, the presence of two communities, French and English. Deux-Montagnes has four elementary schools (two French and two English), three high schools (two French and one English), and one special school. It has three English churches, one French church and one bilingual church.
On September 9, 1954, at the founding meeting of the People's Church of Saint-Eustache-sur-le-Lac, there were only six members representing Evangelical Christians. Revered L.E. Tuck came from the Lachute church every Sunday afternoon and led the congregation in a prayer and Bible reading session once a week. In the 50s, the Sunday service was held in the Masonic Hall on Cedar avenue and the prayer meetings were held in the homes of congregation members.
In 1959, the community bought three lots on 5th avenue, where, four years later, the church would be completed and blessed in April 1964. In September 1965, Reverend Sorley became responsible for the community and remained in his position for almost ten years. He was replaced for a brief period by Reverend Earl Howard, who in turn was replaced by Frank Mitchell in August 1976. In December 1980, Reverend Kent Osborne, a former missionary with the merchant marine came to Deux-Montagnes and served until 2002. There was a period of transition during which the congregation thrived in serving one another, reaching out to friends and neighbours in loving fellowship. In November of 2005 Pastor Alain Perez and his wife Marlene moved from a sister church- People's Church - in Southwestern Ontario to join Peoples Church in service.
